Resilience Through Collaboration

The First Nations Leadership and Governance Association (FNLGA) and Climate Caucus have partnered to strengthen First Nations representation in Municipal Governance.

Read the full announcement here.

Currently, just 7 out of 1100 municipal leaders in B.C. are First Nations, despite representing close to 5 percent of the province’s population.

Through this partnership, First Nations candidates running in municipal elections will receive free access to Climate Caucus’ campaign school: a highly-tailored program designed by experienced campaign managers to be strategic, useful and game-changing. Participants will have access to a suite of tools, trainings and an active peer network, alongside successful campaign experts who have won across the country and who will offer advice, office hours and key insights.

First Nations candidates will also have access to a network of mentors, including current and former elected leaders, as well as Indigenous, non-elected leaders, so as to provide an integrated support network across perspectives, cultures and experiences.

How to Get Involved:

For First Nations Candidates

If you’re considering running for municipal office, or are already on that path, this program is built for you.

You’ll gain access to:

  • Practical tools and training tailored to municipal campaigns
  • Peer learning with other candidates across Canada
  • Office hours with experienced campaign managers
  • Insights from experts in local governance and climate leadership
  • One-to-one support from current and former elected officials
  • Guidance from Indigenous leaders
  • A cross-cultural network rooted in shared learning and respect

For former and current local elected leaders:

We’re building a mentorship network that connects First Nations candidates with experienced local elected leaders who can offer guidance, perspective, and encouragement along the way.

You do not have to be Indigenous to help. Nor do you need to be an expert in campaigning. Rather, we’re seeking current and former elected leaders—from across Canada—to share your experiences and your perspectives with folks new to the municipal space.

As a mentor, you will:

  • Support candidates through their campaign journey- Share lessons learned from your leadership experience
  • Share lessons learned from your leadership experience
  • Help build more inclusive and resilient communities

You’d be signing up for one hour of calls per month, or more should you choose. The mentorships will run from approximately May to October.
