Leading Community Building Retrofits for Cost Savings and Resilience

How can councils maintain essential community buildings despite rising energy costs and aging infrastructure?

Join Councillor Andy Thompson to learn from the Pictou County Net Zero Retrofit Project, a community-led initiative delivered in partnership with Navigate Energy. Launched in 2023, the project is successfully upgrading 21 non-profit, community-owned buildings across rural Pictou County—including community centres, firehalls, and an arena—through deep energy retrofits and climate-friendly heating systems at no cost to participating organizations.

As the project concludes, this session will explore how these upgrades are reducing operating costs, strengthening essential community spaces, and demonstrating a scalable model that local governments can adapt to accelerate deep retrofits and long-term infrastructure resilience.

This Chapter is facilitated by Councillor Adam Baden-Clay and is open to current and former local elected leaders who are members of Climate Caucus.
