Women’s Caucus
Equity is a climate issue.
Climate is an equity issue.
The CC Women’s Caucus is open to all women and gender-diverse local elected leaders who are passionate about using climate policy to make their communities safer, healthier and more affordable.
This national network offers:
- Regular meetings with fellow elected leaders to share ideas and experiences.
- A platform for shared learning and strategic dialogue.
- Resources and training workshops.
- Opportunities to hear from and network with high-profile women leaders.
- The chance to collaborate through working groups on key policy areas.
Why do climate and political equity go hand in hand?
Women more likely to support climate policies:
Women are more likely than men to identify climate change and the environment among the top three issues facing Canada today, and are more likely to prioritise housing affordability, healthcare and inequality: all important considerations in climate justice. Women are 2.5 times more likely to demand action on climate from governments. By supporting women in local government, we are supporting some of the strongest proponents of climate justice in Canada.
Women face significant challenges at the Council table:
Women electeds face significant, increasing misogyny and harassment in their roles as our research with the Feminist Campaign School confirmed.
Misogyny and anti-climate stances go hand in hand:
There is not only a clear correlation between sexism and climate change denial in voters; multiple studies recognize that sexism contributes to climate change denial and policy opposition. Combatting sexism and inequality, therefore, also combats the structural thinking that opposes essential policies for our communities’ wellbeing.
Leadership fatigue is on the rise:
Trolling and doxing is on the rise; polarization continues at a rapid rate; reports of bullying and harassment are common on councils (more so for women). There are many exceptional resources for women interested in entering politics, but fewer supports for those already in politics so a high proportion do not run again. We need to support our climate champions.
