Understanding Climate Polarization in Canada: Causes, Misconceptions, and Pathways Forward

Public debates around climate action are often framed as deeply polarized — but what actually drives these divisions in Canada, and how can local leaders respond more effectively?

Join us for a conversation with Emily Huddart, Professor of Sociology at The University of British Columbia, whose multi-year research examines the contours of climate polarization in Canada: why Canadians are polarized on climate policy, what factors shape these divisions, and what strategies may help reduce animosity and strengthen civil society.

Drawing from ongoing research, Emily will explore questions including:

  • Why do some people on the political right oppose climate policy while others support it?
  • What common assumptions do not explain right-wing orientations toward climate action?
  • What approaches may help reduce polarization and foster more constructive public dialogue?

This session will offer elected officials a deeper understanding of the social dynamics shaping climate conversations in their communities, along with research-informed insights that can support more effective engagement across political and ideological divides.
