SUMMARY:Sustainability and Non-Profit Housing: Practical Tools for Better Policy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an introduction to a new toolkit\, created in collaboration with BC Non-Profit Housing Association: Understanding the Impacts of Local Sustainability Policies on Non-Profit Housing Providers: A Guide for Local Governments in BC. This toolkit is designed to help municipalities identify and mitigate the unintended impacts of sustainability policies on non-profit housing. From increased capital and operating costs to administrative burdens and tenant affordability pressures\, the toolkit provides practical strategies to balance climate objectives with the long-term viability of affordable housing. \nAs local governments across British Columbia advance ambitious climate and sustainability goals\, it’s important to understand how these policies can affect non-profit housing providers and the communities they serve. Following an overview on how local governments can use this new toolkit to develop more equitable and effective policies\, there will be a panel discussion with non-profit housing professionals to share their first-hand experiences with various sustainability initiatives. \nPanelists Bios: \nMike Ruttan is a retired educator\, former Mayor of Port Alberni and a founder of the Alberni Low Energy Housing Society. In 2022 the society opened BC’s most energy efficient non-profit apartment building. It was the first in the province to achieve step4 on the revised BC Building Code. We have always valued energy efficient buildings that are both beautiful and functional and a strong sense of community. We try to achieve either by building new or through renovations. \nKen Zeitner is the Executive Director of Society of Hope and has provided leadership in non-profit organizations for many years. He and his wife\, Barb\, co-founded the Society of Hope in the early 1990s. His development of the administrative and operational systems served as a foundation for the growth the Society which now has 900 rental housing units located on 20 sites around the Central Okanagan. Ken’s commitment to the non-profit housing sector is evident in his service with the BCNPHA\, including previously sitting on the board. In 2021 Ken was recipient of the Denise Leblond Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition for his dedication and vision in furthering the cause of affordable housing in British Columbia. \nErich Klein serves as Associate Vice President Asset Management & Sustainability at Baptist Housing\, where he has spent the past 14 years helping shape the organization’s approach to facilities\, operations\, and long-term asset care. In his current role\, Erich oversees maintenance and asset management across 21 communities\, ensuring safe\, reliable\, and welcoming housing for more than 2\,700 residents. Erich brings a mechanical engineering background and more than 20 years of hands-on experience with mechanical systems and equipment to his work — a technical foundation that allows him to lead with both depth and practicality. He is known for translating complex facilities challenges into clear\, actionable strategies that keep buildings running smoothly and residents safe. Beyond the technical side of his role\, Erich is deeply committed to the people Baptist Housing serves. He believes that strong asset management isn’t just about equipment and infrastructure — it’s about creating environments where residents can feel secure\, comfortable\, and cared for every day. That philosophy guides his focus on safety\, efficiency\, and sustainability across Baptist Housing’s portfolio\, and reflects the organization’s broader mission of compassionate care for seniors.

SUMMARY:Building Support for Local Climate Action: What Canadians Think About Climate Policies and Investments
DESCRIPTION:EcoAnalytic’s Clean Cities Research project is exploring what residents of Canadian cities know about – and support\, regarding — local climate policies and investments in public infrastructure and decarbonization of buildings and homes. In successive rounds of opinion research—surveys and focus groups — residents of major cities in BC and ON have described their concerns and perceived benefits and trade-offs related to these policies\, and indicated which frames and messages they found most compelling in support of climate policies. In this brisk\, interactive webinar EcoA will summarize its recent research and Re.Climate will offer practical guidance for municipal elected officials wishing to advance critical climate policies in a period of rampant misinformation and government hesitancy. \n\n\n\n\nSpeaker bios:\n\n\nJames Boothroyd \n\nJames is Project Director and co-author of EcoAnalytics Research. He is a communications specialist with broad experience in Canadian environmental NGOs and international public health campaigns. He has also served as Director of Communications for the David Suzuki Foundation and as a writer & researcher for the World Health Organization and Global Fund to Fight AIDS\, TB and Malaria. \n\nAmber Bennett \nAmber is the Executive Director of Re.Climate.  She is one of Canada’s top climate communication strategists and capacity builders. Amber works with groups across the country\, bridging the gap between research and practice. She led the groundbreaking Alberta Narratives Project and supported much of the foundational work to pilot and build Re.Climate.

SUMMARY:Leading Community Building Retrofits for Cost Savings and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:How can councils maintain essential community buildings despite rising energy costs and aging infrastructure? \nJoin Councillor Andy Thompson to learn from the Pictou County Net Zero Retrofit Project\, a community-led initiative delivered in partnership with Navigate Energy. Launched in 2023\, the project is successfully upgrading 21 non-profit\, community-owned buildings across rural Pictou County—including community centres\, firehalls\, and an arena—through deep energy retrofits and climate-friendly heating systems at no cost to participating organizations. \nAs the project concludes\, this session will explore how these upgrades are reducing operating costs\, strengthening essential community spaces\, and demonstrating a scalable model that local governments can adapt to accelerate deep retrofits and long-term infrastructure resilience. \n– \nThis Chapter is facilitated by Councillor Adam Baden-Clay and is open to current and former local elected leaders who are members of Climate Caucus. \nMembers receive calendar invites to these calls. If you have not received one please contact our Network Manager Olivia at olivia@climatecaucus.ca. \nTo become a member (free)\, sign up here or email olivia@climatecaucus.ca with any questions.

SUMMARY:Understanding Climate Polarization in Canada: Causes\, Misconceptions\, and Pathways Forward
DESCRIPTION:Public debates around climate action are often framed as deeply polarized — but what actually drives these divisions in Canada\, and how can local leaders respond more effectively? \nJoin us for a conversation with Emily Huddart\, Professor of Sociology at The University of British Columbia\, whose multi-year research examines the contours of climate polarization in Canada: why Canadians are polarized on climate policy\, what factors shape these divisions\, and what strategies may help reduce animosity and strengthen civil society. \nDrawing from ongoing research\, Emily will explore questions including: \n\nWhy do some people on the political right oppose climate policy while others support it?\nWhat common assumptions do not explain right-wing orientations toward climate action?\nWhat approaches may help reduce polarization and foster more constructive public dialogue?\n\nThis session will offer elected officials a deeper understanding of the social dynamics shaping climate conversations in their communities\, along with research-informed insights that can support more effective engagement across political and ideological divides. \n  \n– \nThis call is open to current and former local elected leaders who are members of Climate Caucus. SUMMARY:First Nations as Partners: Essential Lessons During Turbulent Politics
DESCRIPTION:Reconciliation is the ongoing constitutional process of reconciling the prior presence and rights of Indigenous Peoples with Canada’s assertion of sovereignty. It is grounded in the honour of the Crown and aims for a just and lasting relationship. Advancing that work is increasingly difficult\, given tensions and uncertainty around land rights and governance\, as well as the growing anti-Indigenous racism and organized misinformation moving from the margins into the mainstream. There has never been a more important time to commit to practical\, deeply relational pathways toward reconciliation and to walk alongside others striving to do the same. \nTALK DESCRIPTION: \nAs former elected leaders of two First Nations in Metro Vancouver\, Charlene Aleck and Khelsilem bring hard-won insight into how Indigenous and municipal leaders find common purpose. Both served semi-urban Nations and carried significant responsibilities working across jurisdictions on major projects that benefit entire regions. \nThis session asks a timely question: How do we hold ground on reconciliation and redress when social media pile-ons and fear-driven headlines\, including recent coverage of the Cowichan decision\, make the work harder? Charlene and Khelsilem will share stories from their service on the City of Vancouver’s UNDRIP Task Force\, which worked alongside the Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations to develop the City’s UNDRIP Strategy and Action Plan. \nSession 1 of our Walking Together Chapter is a focused one-hour gathering with an interview portion and small group discussion. You’ll leave with practical tips for working with First Nations\, especially in politically charged moments. \n\nFirst Session Speaker Bios: \nCharlene Aleck (Ts’simtelot) is a Granddaughter of Chief Dan George. She is a former three-term elected Councilor for the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and a spokesperson for the TWN Sacred Trust Initiative. She is a mother and grandmother and has extensive experience serving on boards and working groups across First Nations and municipal jurisdictional divisions to build common ground. This includes serving on the City of Vancouver’s UNDRIP Task Force that worked with the Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations to develop the City’s UNDRIP Strategy and UNDRIP Action Plan.  As a child\, she played Sarah Jim on the CBC program ‘Beachcombers’. She is dedicated to the protection and restoration of the land and water her people have been the stewards of since time immemorial. Charlene is an Associate with Voor Urban Labs. Photo by Duncan McCue.\n \nKhelsilem is the former Chairperson of the Squamish Nation. First elected to Council in 2017\, he served as  Spokesperson and led Nation-building workacross housing\, governance\, and intergovernmental relations. This included founding a non-profit now delivering 1\,000 subsidized homes and advancing the 6\,000-unit Sen̓áḵw development on Squamish lands\, the largest Indigenous housing project in Canadian history. His work has long centred on progressive change: climate justice\, social democracy\, and housing affordability. He is studying for his Master of Public Administration at the University of Victoria integrating their service experience with broader theoretical underpinnings. A vocal advocate for democratic reform and good governance\, Khelsilem brings experience working across jurisdictions and has served on the boards of Vancity\, the New Relationship Trust\, and the City of Vancouver’s UNDRIP Task Force.
